Pavlína Temcsáková

From Kamenka to Athens

My name is Pavlína Temcsáková and I studied textile design at the Secondary School of Art and Design in Brno. I am a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology, where I studied in the studios of painting, intermedia, and sculpture.

In my work, you can see the blending of painting and sculptural principles, which I also explore through performative approaches. My artistic practice focuses on themes such as the memory of the body in the context of intimacy, addictions, and the possibility of transformation through experience. In the autumn of 2024, I deepened my knowledge of gallery operations during an internship at the Snehta Residency in Greece.

While studying at FaVU (2017), I opened a small gallery in Kamenka, Brno – the Nadveřegalerie. There I exhibited works not only by emerging stars of the contemporary art scene, such as Markéta Filipová, Kristýna Šarochová, and Jakub Tajovský, but also works by Jiří Valoch.

She is not just a car

Kaštanová 70, Brno 23. 5. 2025

Curator, graphic design: Iva Davidová
Performers: Pavlína Temcsáková, Ludmila Jankovichová

Pavlína Temcsáková’s performance, taking place at a car service lot where her own dying, immobile car is currently located, is meant to serve as a kind of farewell ritual – a gesture of rooting, of awareness of cooperation between human and machine, and of baptizing the new life of this machine.

Here, the car means more than a mere machine. It is not about humanizing it, but rather about celebrating the embodiment of something whose service opens up possibilities for the human body – possibilities that, without this machine, would remain insurmountable obstacles. For the artist, the performance also opens and closes other obstacles – emotional ones, not inherently connected with transport. Inside the space that this machine, created for transport, provides, emerges a place isolated from its surroundings. A place for screaming, a place for love, a place for anticipation and dread. A place where it is possible to perceive time with all the senses.

Humans created the car as a helper. In late capitalism, the car takes on a grand and ominous meaning in the form of violence. Not that it did not do so before. The car industry is part of the endless extraction from the environment and from workers’ bodies. It is part of the hostile transformation of space, which increasingly adapts to the needs of a comfortable, selfish car-loving culture. Yet it is necessary not to forget that…

🇬🇧: "One of the main elements of this exhibition are objects installed with the use of rope, reflecting the technique of shibari and connecting the objects with a drawn line. These objects are not only a means of artistic expression, but also have therapeutic potential for the author. Pavlína uses them in her approach as a visual metaphor for imagination, which can help overcome the limits of the physical body and support the transformative process of experience. Her creations are full of colors and shapes that reflect the principles of painting, but at the same time are able to mediate the processing of bodily experiences, limitations, and sensations during the process of bondage."
